Everyone doesn’t have to wear matching outfits

And you don’t have to toss skittles into your three-year-old’s mouth to bribe them to sit still on a pumpkin. That sentence just made me shudder. Did you?

I know you carry the mental load of a life, but not here. Here, you don’t need to micromanage. You don’t need to bribe or beg. You just need to invite me into your lives so I can witness the amount of love you give. And give. And give.

Here, you are seen. But maybe more importantly, I see what sometimes we can’t see, especially when the laundry piles up and somebody we love dies and we miscarry, again. I believe it is in those moments we need someone to see past the muck of it all and remind us who we are and how deeply we are loved.

I show up for life, even when it sucks. Of course I’ll get everyone smiling and looking at the camera. But a monkey can do that. And I promise you the photos you’ll reach for aren’t the Christmas card ones, but the in-between moments you thought only you appreciated, the ones where even when they were crying, knee torn, it was you they reached for.

I give my clients exactly what I give my family, my friends, my own self, even when it’s hard:

My family sessions are experiences far from anything considered “normal.” A laid-back attitude with no-pressure prompts are the backbone of how I photograph families authentically and honestly.

There will be no, “Sit down and turn your head to the left, now smile!”

Rather, there is exploration, play, curiosity. There is time spent from the beginning in getting to know you, your child, a warming-up period crucial to capturing anything worth remembering.

Children don’t do well being dictated to, but they do respond to play. They love when you show them how the camera works, let them take their own photo, pushing the big buttons all by themselves. They want this stranger also interested in the bug they just found, the leaf, the big rock tossed into the water. Before I photograph anyone, I first interact.

These experiences encourage movement, tickle fights, maybe getting a little dirty. We meet in places that feel meaningful to you: backyards and favorite creekbeds, kitchens making pancakes for dinner.

In a session that feels more like play in front of a photographer that feels more like an old friend, magic can happen. The pressure of being what we think we ought to be falls away, and we can be present in front of our children. We don’t have to micromanage if the person behind the camera is getting the shot. She is. She did.

Here, we’re doing play. We’re reading books at bedtime. We’re making pancakes for dinner in your kitchen sticky with fingerprints. We’re in the backyard with the dog, dancing. We’re doing you.
