EVEN MORE INTENTION THIS YEAR

mother’s day minis

a backyard garden mini session event, Amanda Nichols style

Oh the Mama’s Day Minis. They’ve always been close to my heart, but this year - man, they hit differently. I became a mother to a gentle, perceptive little blue-eyed boy last August, and it completely yanked me into the incredibly hard and indescribably beautiful world of motherhood. As you know, I will never be the same.

As I plan for this year’s event - the fourth one I’ll host - I want to make a few changes. You’ll still get the same authentic laughter, smiles, and connection you expect. Your kids will recognize my goofy personality and ability to make them feel at ease rather quickly, and you, mama, will know the images we take will capture you in a way that is both vulnerable yet beautiful.

What I want more of this year is intention. While previously it was a mostly chaotic whirlwind of running though hanging sheets backdropped by golden light, this year we will slow down (while still having a burst of chaos at the end to capture the soul of your wild child). I guess I now understand the heart of the mother and its that beauty and vulnerability I want to capture.

So what does that look like? It’s more breastfeeding amongst the privacy of the white sheets and the patina-ed pots of hellebores. It’s more gritty black and white, more looking one another in the eyes, more softness. I guess for so long I’ve focused on the wildness of the child in these sessions, whereas this year, I really want the strength of the mother to shine through.

Give yourselves the gift of being seen, mamas.

This is not the polite cell phone snap your partner takes as evidence that you exist during their childhoods. This is another mama looking you in the eyes saying I see you. I know it’s freaking hard. Let me show you how beautiful your chaos is. Let me take a photograph of your resilience, your grit, your strength.

I want more pregnant mamas, postpartum mamas, breastfeeding mamas. I want wrinkled linen and fistfuls of dandelions. I want to ask your child what is their favorite thing about their mother, and I want to capture your face as they say it.

As always, I encourage mamas coming early and staying after to snack and mingle, as I believe whole-heartedly in community. I have a big yard and there will be lemonade and cookies and my own mother here to greet you. My son will surely be toddling around, and no doubt, my eyes will be tired too, but ready to meet you right where you are.

I can’t wait to hug you.
